Enough of Johnny Damon

Is it just me or are we all tired of of "the Johnny Damon saga"? I mean, come on, you can't read, go on the internet, listen to MLB on XM or blog without 15 minutes or 2000 words on JD. Let's be fair here. This isn't Damon's fault nor Brian Cashman's. This is the media jumping on a story that is starting to make the Yankees out the bad guy. This where I begin to draw the line.
This is not the Yankee's problem. Damon chose his agent, Scott Boros, knowing what type of agent is. Great if your Damon, not so great if your Damon. If JD was 32 years old, like the last time he was a free agent, Boros is perfect. He will squeeze every last dime out of a club. Boros is doing his job. But, Damon is not 32. He is 37 and has signs of decline. Yeah, he made a great base running move in the World Series, but he then pulled a muscle and would not have been able to play if there was a game 7. We have been lead to believe that Damon was offered a pretty good contract early in free agency and he declined. That's his choice. Now he is living with that choice because Boros advised him to wait, create a wedge with another team and we get you more. Bad move for Damon. The news today tells us everything will be resolved in the next week. I hope so

Murcer May Be Sick Again

According to the Daily News, Bobby Murcer's brain cancer may be getting worse. He will undergo a brain biopsy on Monday, and hopefully everything will be fine. This really has not been a great offseason for the Yanks, especially in off-field issues. Good thing the season is just a month away.

Knoblauch Swindled by the Feds

The crafty Chuck Knoblauch was tracked down and by the Feds and will give his deposition on Friday. Andy Pettitte is booked for Wednesday also Roger Clemens will be interviewed on Feb. 5.

In other news The Captain held the fifth annual Derek Jeter Celebrity Golf Classic at the Avila Golf & Country Club in Tampa. The golf tournament included 26 foursomes and more than 25 friends and fellow celebrities such as Jorge Posada, Don Zimmer, Tino Martinez, Michael Jordan, Ken Griffey Jr., Morgan Freeman, Greg Anthony, Allan Houston, Annika Sorenstam, and Natalie Gulbis.

D.J. had this to say

"It means a lot to have so many different people come out and give their support," said Jeter, who took ceremonial putts with each foursome as they made their way through the 17th hole. "It's pretty special to have all these celebrities take the time out of their busy schedules to come out here and show that they care."

Pirates Attempt to Get Even Worse

Are you a 32 year-old major league pitcher? Have you never thrown over 200 innings in a season? Is your career ERA 5.09 (90 ERA+)? Well, the Pittsburgh Pirates have a job for you. Jaret Wright, I know you all remember him, has signed a minor-league deal with the Pirates and will make $800k if he makes the major league roster.

In other news: The (Devil) Rays locked up James Shields with a very creative contract. Take note Yankees. Also, the Mets are now the frontrunners for Johan Santana, pretty much because they're still interested.

BREAKING NEWS: The Yankees Spend A Lot Of Money

ESPN had this to say:

While their streak of AL East titles ended at nine, the Yankees wound up with a record payroll of $218.3 million.

The World Series champion Boston Red Sox were a distant second at $155.4 million, according to information received by clubs from the commissioner's office. The Los Angeles Dodgers were third at $125.6 million, followed by the New York Mets ($120.9 million), Chicago Cubs ($115.9 million), Seattle ($114.4 million), Los Angeles Angels ($111 million), Philadelphia ($101.8 million), San Francisco ($101.5 million) and the Chicago White Sox ($100.2 million).

In addition to the largest payroll, the Yankees have the highest revenue in the majors. New York took in $415 million last year, giving about $100 million of it away in the sport's revenue-sharing plan.

Both the Yankees and New York Mets will receive revenue boosts in 2009, when they move into new stadiums.

Yankees Out On Santana

The Yankees are no longer talking to the Twins about Johan Santana according to Ken Rosenthal. If that is true Hank "The Tank" should announce it soon. Then again, this could just as easily mean that the Yanks and Twins have already worked out a deal and Santana is on his way to New York right now, but probably not.

Yankees Interested in Cameron

According to MLBTR the Yankees are interested in signing Mike Cameron if they trade the Melk Man. As we have said before A-Rod has been privately endorsing Cameron. The Yankees are the Brew Crew's main competition for Cameron. This doesn't make much sense at all as Cameron is a 35 year-old outfielder who is only getting worse and was never great to begin with. He is also serving a 25-game suspension to start the season. The Yankees currently have four better outfielders, and I really don't think Melky will get much for us in a trade,

Yankees News and Notes

Some Yankees' news you may not have heard:
  • Andy Pettitte has hired Sammy Sosa's lawyer, Jay Reisinger, for his congressional hearing on steroids. Looks like his strategy will be to pretend he can't speak english.
  • Miguel Cairo has signed with the Mariners to a one-year deal. I'm surprised the Dodger's didn't sign him so he can play every position on the field and not hit.

Why Can't They Just Leave Chuck Knoblauch Alone?

The witch hunt continues: First MLB went after Chuck Knoblauch, now it's Congress. Knoblauch has been called to testify before Congress, regarding his inclusion in the Mitchell Report. Other less significant players also asked to testify are Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte, along with Brian McNamee and Kirk Radomski. Why is everyone so jealous of Chuck's raw skill? MLB and Congress just need to accept the fact that certain people (like Chuck and Joba) are naturally gifted and do not need steroids.

As an aside, Shane Spencer has been named hitting coach of the Padres A-ball affiliate.

Jim Leyritz Arrested

UPDATE: He had a suspended license before he was charged for DUI and manslaughter

Former Yankee hero Jim Leyritz was arrested this morning in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on charges of DUI and DUI manslaughter. He ran a red light while driving drunk and collided with another car, killing a woman. Ouch. Hate to see something like this happen. Leyritz has always been a fan favorite and something like this really hurts.
