NOTES: Yankees picked up former Padre 1B/OF Chad Huffman off of waivers and he was sent to AAA. Chan Ho Park is "sick" so he will not be available tonight (good news). Joba is available but less likely to go according to Girardi:
“I’m not afraid for him to go back-to-back at this point, but I’m not real comfortable – depending on how he feels – with him going three out of four days yet.”
It is going to be a hot 85 in Boston tonight. The difference in temperature in the 3 games is really unusual.

Notes: Marcus Thames is making his Yankee debut due to his general success against lefties. He is a career 1-2 with a long ball against the brave Jon Lester. Tonight keep an eye on the chemistry between Posada and Burnett. Though the rift was over blown by the media it is vital that these two win together. As I said in the last post Phil Hughes is with the team tonight. It seems Girardi is playing match-ups to determine who will come in from the pen. We just ask he doesn't bring in Chan Ho Park. My guess is Joba will be good to go though throwing 30 on sunday. Marte, though he looked awful, is physically fine and is able to pitch tonight.

There will be a light rain in Boston to start the game.

Revised PECOTA Puts Yankees in 1st.

The PECOTA predictions that we looked at yesterday were apparently wrong. They had the Yankees in 3rd in the AL East while the Rays held down 1st. Baseball Prospectus released a revised version of PECOTA and here is how it looks now.

I really don't expect a tie to be the outcome; a close race with the Yankees coming out on top, perhaps.

Via Jerry Hairston Jr: Yankees Looking for Damon's Price to Come Down

UPDATE (by Charlie) 9:55- Ca$h Money just shot this down. It would be stupid to not wait for Damon's price to go down. He is just covering.

Well Jerry Hairston dropped on the radio and said some interesting things. Jerry Hairston: Brian Cashmans going to get mad at me, but Yanks didn't make me offer because he's waiting on Damon price to come down" on XM

If true then Cashman is up to his ninja ways again. See: Mark Teixeira, Javier Vazquez. Also it makes the 2010 Yankee Lineup look unbeatable. It hurts defensively sure though Damon's 2009 may be an outlier of his incredibly ugly UZR/150 of -36.1.
But at the Yankees price it wouldn't hurt to start Garnder more to keep Damon short while salvaging the LF defense.

The lineup again would look amazingly powerful, let's take a look.

    Derek Jeter - SS
    Nick Johnson - DH
    Mark Teixeira - 1B
    Alex Rodriguez - 3B
    Jorge Posada - C
    Johnny Damon - LF
    Curtis Granderson - CF
    Nick Swisher - RF
    Robinson Cano - 2B

Briefly on lineup positions, Nick Johnson should be 2nd. His .400 OBP in front of Teixeira and A-Rod? Oh boy I smell a lot of runs. Posada or Granderon might be in the 5 hole but I see it going to Posada. But it looks pretty interchangeable so I may be wrong.

But this powerhorse offense with an acquisition of Damon will be otherworldly. Let's hope it happens.

Yankees Overtake Rangers in the Bronx

This was Wang's best start of the season; he gave up 5 runs. However they are going to keep the Wanger in the rotation, he will face the Sox on Thursday. Wang said: “I can do better”, I sure do hope so. You can't just keep switching the rotation around so hopefully this will get things back to normal. So with Wang back in the rotation we have to make room so we are sending Hughes to the pen.

    Joe had this to say:
"I thought he pitched better than his numbers indicated, I'm not making excuses, I was happy with what I saw. I know people are going to say, 'Oh boy, he gave up five runs."

As you can see the Yankees mounted a great comeback.

Melky's two-run home run in the eighth inning, his fifth go-ahead hit in the eighth inning or later this season, gave the Yankees their sixth win in their last eight games.

I was at this game, by the way. Very exciting..

A cool fact: A home run has been hit in all 26 games at the New Stadium

    Yankees Drop A Tough One

The Yankees dropped a tough one today vs. the Tribe. Pavano pitched well. That about describes the luck the Yankees had. Teixeira, the only one who did damage vs. Pavano, extended his season-high hitting streak to 13 games and had four RBIs. He hit a two-run homer, his 16th, in the 6th.

    Notes:
    • The Indians won for the seventh time in their last 10 home games.
    • Jhonny Peralta won the game with his third career walk-off hit. He had three RBIs against the Yankees after having just one in his seven previous starts.
    • Mark Teixeira had four RBIs, giving him 34 for the month. That's the second most he had in a month in his career (35 in September 2005). His 219 homers in his first seven seasons are tied with Todd Helton, Hank Aaron and Joe DiMaggio for 11th-most.
    • Yankees RHP Joba Chamberlain is scheduled to start Monday night. It would be his first appearance in Cleveland since the 2007 AL division series when he was bombarded by a swarm of bugs.
    • Jeter has batted .397 (25-for-63) during a 14-game hitting streak.
