News and Notes

  • The Yankees and Padres are bidding for the Mexican pitcher, Walter Silva.
  • Melky will not take part in the World Baseball Classic.
  • Hank the Tank fires back full force at John Henry's salary cap whining. Hank had this to say:
“Along with a few other teams, we’re basically baseball’s stimulus package,” he said. “As long as we’re..giving all this money to other teams in revenue sharing, a staggering amount, we should be able to spend on salaries what we want to. Because of revenue sharing and because of the popularity nationwide, the Yankees are critical to baseball.”
  • A-Rod talks a little bit about something besides steroids.
  • Pete Abraham has some great spring training coverage from toady. Tino and Bernie were in camp!
  • The Head Stein made a rare appearance at camp today, meeting with some of the players and coaches.
  • Meet A-Rod's cousin's trainer.
  • The MLB wants to have a few words with A-Rod.

    Adrian Gonzalez

Pete Caldera believes that the Yankees are considering trading for Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez is under contract for 2009 and 2010 for a very low amount of money, he`s put up very good numbers the past two years, he`s fairly young, and is a good fielder. The numbers look good on their own, however, they are even more impressive when considering the home park he plays in. Gonzalez could be a long term solution for the Yankees. His favorable contract may also allow the Yankees to sign two free agent starters as they appear to want to. Would you give up Phil Hughes and another prospect or two for Gonzalez? Its a tough call but I think I would.

If you want to get insane then could the Yankees get both Gonzalez and Peavy in a huge mega-deal? Hughes+Cano+Montero+Kennedy+another prospect maybe? Then the Yankees would go out and sign Mike Cameron, Orlando Hudson, Casey Blake, and C.C. Sabathia or Derek Lowe. It decimates the farm but both Gonzalez and Peavy are young and relatively cheap. Keep in mind this is just rampant speculation on my part and I haven't thought this through that well.

NOTES: The Yanks have a season high 6 game winning streak going and are facing Josh Banks who has great numbers this year. Joba's pitch count is about 105 pitches in his 4th start as a Yankee. Matsui's knee is bothering him a little but he should be able to pinch hit toady.

    Game 71: Padres at Yankees

    YANKEES (37-33)
    Damon LF
    Jeter SS
    Abreu RF
    Rodriguez 3B
    Matsui DH
    Giambi 1B
    Posada C
    Cano 2B
    Cabrera CF
    Pettitte LHP

It'll be a matchup of lefties as Randy Wolfe faces Andy Pettitte.

Notes: Dan Giese has been named the starter for Saturday vs. the Reds. The Staten Island Yankees will be playing the Brooklyn Cyclones on SNY at 7:00.

Update 8:57: My bad, the Staten Island game is not on SNY, but Thursday's should be. Good to see Pettitte pitching well. 9 K's so far. Also, why Billy Traber? His minor league numbers are crappy and he's already shown that he can't get it done at the major league level. David Robertson probably needs some more time, but why not Scott Patterson?
